How to Video: Don & Doff Disposable Gloves

A Quick How-to Video

It’s easy to overlook basic glove safety practices when they are repetitive tasks. Click on the picture below to watch a video demonstration of properly don and doff disposable gloves.

The first step is selecting the correct size glove. A glove that is too small is prone to tearing and puts stress on the user’s hand, which can cause fatigue and injury.

You can tell when a glove is too small when stretch marks are formed when the fingers are straightened.

A glove that is too large will cause a loss in dexterity. The excess material creates folds, extends beyond the fingers, and can become glove fragments that enter the food or product being handled.

Donning Disposable Gloves

  1. Remove any hand jewelry. Your nails should be below your fingertip to avoid snagging the glove.
  2. Thoroughly wash your hands.
  3. Select the appropriate-sized gloves in a clean area.
  4. Hold with one hand and insert the other. When the base of your thumb reaches the glove's cuff, spread your fingers and insert your hand into the glove.
  5. After the glove is on, check there are no holes or tears
  6. Repeat the above steps for the other glove.

When removing a pair of disposable gloves, to prevent cross-contamination, do not touch the outside of the glove with bare skin, and do not remove gloves near or over the product or any product handling surface. Read about how using a disposable glove does not automatically create food safety.

One should follow these steps to doff disposable gloves properly:

Doffing Disposable Gloves

  1. Pinch one glove at the wrist and remove the glove by pulling away from your body.
  2. Continue holding the glove you just removed with your gloved hand.
  3. Using two fingers with your bare hand, slip inside the glove's cuff you’re still wearing.
  4. Pulling away from your body, peel off the second glove turning it inside out, and leaving the first glove inside as you remove it.
  5. Dispose of the gloves safely.
  6. Wash your hands thoroughly.

Worker Safety Implications

Professionals such as first responders, medical personnel, law enforcement, and others also face the challenge of potentially coming in contact with potent drugs, such as fentanyl. In addition to proper donning and doffing procedures, we recommend front-line workers also wear fentanyl resistant gloves. Read more about why fentanyl resistant gloves are vital for protection to exposure.
