Vinyl vs. Nitrile Gloves - The Food Safety Facts!

Nitrile gloves vs. Vinyl gloves molecular structure

Vinyl gloves are a cheap choice of protection for workers. Due to their molecular structure, there are associated risks that limit their performance and affect barrier protection.  In comparison to latex and nitrile gloves, vinyl gloves:

  • do not have comparable resistance to stretch and elongation
  • break easily
  • have more holes occurring during routine use
  • have a higher permeation of bacteria and virus
  • have poor resistance to many chemicals
  • are less flexible and elastic and do not fit well

Studies have highlighted the greater permeability of vinyl gloves to bacteria and virus than natural rubber latex or nitrile gloves during use. Such permeability increases the risk of cross contamination between products or patients and worker wearing the gloves.
